On Your Feet All Day? How to Choose Socks for Long Shifts
Nurses, traders, teachers, chefs and security staff spend eight to twelve hours standing on hard floors. The right pair of socks makes the end of the shift feel very different.

Standing all day on concrete, tile or a shop floor puts steady pressure on your heels and the balls of your feet. Shoes get most of the attention, but socks are the layer that actually touches your skin, and they decide whether your feet stay dry, cushioned and blister-free.
Look for cushion where your feet land
A sock with extra padding under the heel and the ball of the foot softens every step. Sports and trekking socks usually have this built in, which is why many people on long shifts swear by them even at work.
Keep sweat moving
In Ghana's heat, damp feet are the main cause of blisters and odour. Choose breathable cotton blends with a little stretch so the sock pulls moisture away from the skin and dries quickly.
Get the height right
- Crew socks for boots and work shoes, so the collar never rubs your ankle.
- Ankle socks for trainers and clogs on lighter days.
- Grip socks if you work on smooth floors at home or in a care setting.
