How to Wash Socks So They Last Longer
Thin heels, stretched cuffs and fading colours usually come from the wash, not from wearing. A few small habits keep every pair soft and in shape.

A good pair of socks should last for months of regular wear. Most of the damage happens in the bucket or the machine, so how you wash matters as much as what you buy.
Turn them inside out
Sweat and skin collect on the inside of a sock. Turning socks inside out cleans the part that needs it most and protects the outside from rubbing and pilling.
Cool water, gentle soap
- Wash in cool or lukewarm water. Hot water shrinks cotton and weakens the stretch in cuffs.
- Use a mild soap and skip bleach, even on white socks.
- Wash darks and whites separately so colours stay bright.
Dry in the shade
Strong midday sun fades colours fast. Hang socks by the toe in a shady, breezy spot and they will dry quickly without losing their colour.
